Mantra are words/phrase from the holy vedas which invokes the divine power and help the sadhak in attaining his divine goals. Mantras are used in Puja and Sadhanas. The sound generated by the recitation of Mantras, produces strong vibration and energy. Mantra chanting must be done correctly and with full faith and devotion as prescribed in the scriptures. Preferably done under the guidance of a Guru who may initiate people to the appropriate Mantra. The Mantras are help in the attainment of God, Moksha, health, wealth and fortune if used correctly.
Mantra chanting can also be used as an alternative therapy whereby chanting of vedic mantra stimulate the body's natural metabolism and help in healing. The simplest and most basic form of Mantra is Om or Aum which is the root of all mantras. Om is believed to be the most important and powerful mantra syllable and for this reason it is added in almost all Hindu prayers.
Mantra japa consists of the repetition of a mantra over and over again, usually in the multiples of 108. The achievement of siddhi of a Mnatra a minimum number of Mantra Japa is necessary. Depending on the Mantra and its purpose, siddhi may be attained from 10000 to 125000 japa. This is indicative and as mentioned earlier, each specific Mantra has its own siddhi requirements. We may chant millions of times but if we do not have faith or devotion, it will not achieves its goal. Devtion and faith are the most important aspect of Mantra Japa. the meaning of the Mantars must also be well understood before the start of the Mantra Japa.
Since 108 is the most appropriate and popular number of times a Mantra is recited, most mala would have 108 beads + one meru bead. After completing one cycle of 108 beads, and if another cycle of mantra recitation is to be done, the devotee must turn around the mala and start another 108 cycle. The meru must not be crossed.
